Iran ’s foreign trade performance in brief
(March 21 – June 21, 2004)

Exports:

According to the primary statistics of Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration during the above mentioned period more than 3636.7 thousand tons of different commodities worthy of 1394.4 million dollars were exported which demonstrate increases of 9.8 percent in weight and 20.4 percent in value as compared to the statistics of the same period of last year. Considering 9 million dollars of exported items through luggage – trade and 86.6 million dollars of exported goods via border markets, the export of country reaches 1490 million dollars, which indicates a growth of 11.8 percent in comparison with the same period of the previous year.The average price of one ton of the exported items has been 383.4 dollars, showing a growth of 9.6 percent in comparison with the same period of the year 2003. According to table (1), minerals had the most increased price among the other items. On the other hand, the least increased price related to industry and petrochemicals.According to the figures of table (2), during the mentioned period of 2004, the industry and petrochemical group, from the weight and value point of view, acquired a share of 82.1 and 68.5 percent, agricultural group, 4.9 and 20 percent, carpet and handicraft, 0.2 and 7.6 percent and mineral group, 12.8 and 3.9 percent, respectively, of the total weight and value of the country’s non – oil exports. According to table (4) and based on the foreseen figures of the third plan, 66.7 percent of the objectives of this plan was fulfilled which increases as 71.3 percent in the case of considering luggage trade and border markets.Based on table (3), 10 main exported items formed 55 percent of total value of non – oil exports that increased as 18.7 percent compared to the same period of the year 2003. According to the said table, export of ironware and steel with 148.6 million dollars acquired the first rank among the other items. More than 63.7 percent of the total value of the first 10 items relates to industrial and petrochemical group. The most increased price relates to kinds of tar and ironware and still with 100 percent and the most decreased price relates to formed aluminum with 56.4 percent. The export of formed aluminum with drop of 50.4 percent in value had the most decreased value among the other items.

Industrial and petrochemical group

Based on the primary statistics of IRICA in March 21 – June 21, 2004, around 2985.9 thousand tons of different industrial goods worthy of 955.4 million dollars have been exported which demonstrate 20 and 21.9 percent rise in weight and value compared to the similar period of the previous year. The export of industrial and petrochemical group allocated a share of 82.1 and 68.5 percent of the total weight and value of non – oil exports of the country. The value share of industrial products in the basket of non – oil exports increased as 0.9 percent comparing with the same period of 2003. The export of industrial and petrochemical products increased as 1.6 percent in value compared to the same period of the previous year. This group fulfilled 69.5 percent of the objectives of the third plan.The main exported items of this group include: ironware and steel with $148.6m and 15.6 percent, liquid gases (liquid propane, butane…) with $95m and 9.9 percent, light naphtha with $45.3m and 4.7 percent, formed aluminum with $35.5m and 3.7 percent, kinds of tar with $29.3m and 3.1 percent and kinds of benzene with $25.9m and 2.7 percent. Light naphtha with 183.4 percent and formed aluminum with 50.4 percent had the most increased and decreased value, respectively, among the other items.

Agricultural group

Based on the primary statistics of IRICA in March 21 – June 21, 2004, a round 177.4 thousand tons of different agricultural goods worthy of 278.7 million dollars have been exported which demonstrate fall of 10.7 percent in weight and rise of 26.8 percent in value in comparison with the similar period of the previous year. The average price of one ton of agricultural goods reached 1571 dollars, which increased as 41.9 percent. The export of agricultural group allocated a share of 4.9 and 20 percent of the total weight and value of non – oil exports of the country which shows fall of 1.1 percent in weight and rise of 1 percent in value in comparison with the same period of the previous year. This group fulfilled 76.5 percent more than the objectives of the third plan.The main exported items of this group include: pistachio and pistachio kernel with $144m and 51.7 percent, kinds of hide with $21m and 7.5 percent, saffron with $20.7m and 7.4 percent, kinds of raisin with $17.7m and 6.4 percent, kinds of intestine with $11.8m and 4.3 percent of the total value of the export of this group. The first 5 items of the agricultural group formed 77.3 percent of weight and 215.2 million dollars of value of this group. Caviar with 216.9 percent and fresh and dried date with 13.9 percent had the most increased and decreased value, respectively, among the other items.

Carpet and handicrafts

Based on the primary statistics of IRICA in March 21 – June 21, 2004, around 6.6 thousand tons of different handicrafts worthy of 106.4 million dollars have been exported which demonstrate 22.8 and 5 percent fall in weight and value compared to the similar period of the previous year. The average price of one ton of handicrafts reached 16121.2 dollars, which increased as 23.8 percent. The export of carpet and handicrafts allocated a share of 0.2 and 7.6 percent of the total weight and value of non – oil exports of the country which shows stability in weight but 2.1 percent fall in value as compared with the same period of the previous year. This group fulfilled 44.1 percent of the objectives of the third plan. The main exported item of this group includes: hand – woven carpet with $90m and 84.4 percent, which indicates rise of 3.1 percent in weight, and fall of 7.6 percent in value. During the above – mentioned period, the average price of one kilo of hand – woven carpet, with a decline of 10.4 percent, was 24.9 dollars. 

Mineral group

Based on the primary statistics of IRICA in March 21– June 21, 2004 , around 466.7 thousand tons of different mineral goods worthy of 53.8 million dollars have been exported which demonstrate fall of 24.5 percent in weight and rise of 25.2 percent in value compared to the similar period of the previous year. The average price of one ton of mineral goods reached 115.2 dollars, which increased as 65.7 percent. The export of mineral group allocated a share of 12.8 and 3.9 percent of the total weight and value of non – oil exports of the country which shows decrease of 5.8 percent in weight and increase of 0.2 percent in value in comparison with the same period of the previous year. This group fulfilled 69.5 percent of the objectives of the third plan.The main exported items of this group include: zinc stone and concentrate with $9.3m and 17.3 percent, unprocessed building stone with $6.4m and 11.9 percent of the total value of the export of this group. Mineral sulfur with 790.7 percent and bentonite with 86.2 percent had the most increased and decreased value, respectively, among the other items.

Imports:

Based on the primary statistics of IRICA in March 21 – June 21,2004, around 6772.4 thousand tons of different non – oil goods worthy of 7595.5 million dollars have been imported to Iran which demonstrate decrease of 12.3 percent in weight and increase of 23.7 percent in value, respectively, compared to the similar period of the previous year. The average price of one ton of imported goods reached 1100 dollars, which increased as 37.5 percent in comparison with the same period of the previous year.According to table (5), other industrial and mechanical machineries with 1724.3 million dollars and 22.7 percent obtained the first rank while ironware and electrical, industrial instruments with 9.7 and 6.5 percent, gained the 2nd and 3rd ranks accordingly. During the said period, industrial / mechanical machinery and equipments and medical products with 57.8 percent and 9.9 percent had the most and least increased value, respectively, among the other items. During the said period of 2004 , the main imported items gained a share of 36.9 percent in weight and 55.2 percent in value of the total imports of the country. According to the objectives of the third plan, at least 5329.2 million dollars of goods should have been imported while the imports of the country during the mentioned period reached 7595.5 million dollars. These figures demonstrate a fulfillment of 42.5 percent more than the predicted figures. In March - June 2004, Shahid Rajaie customs with 40.6 percent in weight and 46.4 percent in value acquired the highest share in weight and value of imports among the other customs houses. As for exports, Bandar Imam Khomeini customs with 37.4 and 27.3 percent in weight and value obtained the highest share of total non – oil exports among the other customs houses.
